BENDEMEER SECONDARY SCHOOL
Making NE Come Alive @ Bendemeer Secondary
In Bendemeer, we believe in Making NE Come Alive! Thus the school takes a concerted effort to appreciate our students and their needs - to understand what makes them tick. Our student-centric approach to NE stems from our efforts to make learning fun and engaging.
Our key approach is very much anchored on cultivating student leadership in National Education. We have adopted a Leading the Learner model in our efforts to create greater platforms for student to lead as they are provided with more platforms for student voice and ownership of nurturing their own opinions. Thus the approach of student leading in NE discussions eg ClassRUG and student led learning journeys like Battlefield and Heritage Guides.
Class RUG (Racial Unity Group)
The school takes on a student-centred approach for NE and creates opportunities for developing student leadership in NE. A teacher-initiated suggestion, ClassRUG or Class Racial Unity Group is an important unit in the school. The ClassRUG is a uniquely Bendemeer concept of leveraging on the class as the basic unit of social cohesion. It provides another platform for student leaders to lead in student-centred activities.
The ClassRUG Committee consists of 4-5 students of different races leading their peers in fun and engaging activities that bring about deeper understanding and appreciation of citizenry issues. In the spirit of encouraging creativity, ClassRUG activities in Bendemeer Secondary have spiraled to a higher level where activities are customized by each ClassRUG committee. This has led to greater variety and more enthusiastic learning experiences.
Leading the Learner Model - Students taking leadership in Learning Journeys
Battlefield Guides
Building on the school's emphasis on TLLM and interest-driven learning, the Battlefield Guides are a group of enthusiastic student leaders who are keen to develop and share their passion on Singapore's historic battles. They have ventured into the rarely frequented historical sites such as Fort Serapong and the Shinto Shrine paving the way for other interested students to share their learning. The Battlefield Guides are trained and today, these students lead and serve as guides for Learning Journeys to Battlefield sites. They have been instrumental in enthusing others in the History of Singapore and in training others as Battlefield guides.

Heritage Guides
The Heritage Guides is yet another example of how Bendemeer Secondary School provides platforms for authentic and meaningful learning. Our Heritage guides are trained and not only lead their peers on guided learning journeys to Singapore's rich heritage sites but also bring cheer to our community and key partners through arranging similar visits for the elderly and the larger community. With such keen enthusiasm, our Heritage guides are also raring to lead students and staff through the many interactive and reflective activities that will be featured at our new proposed Heritage Centre.
